When Colchester Operatic Society decided to stage Stephen Sondheim's Sweeny Todd they asked Ron Levy, who owns The Colchester Barbershop, to show actor Mark Fincham how to wield the razor convincingly.
"Mark was keen to learn how to hold an open razor for his part playing the Demon Barber of Fleet Street and I talked to him about the show and his preparing for it," said Ron.
He added: "In all the years I've been watching films and shows which have had barbers in them, not once have I seen an actor hold the razor the right way.
If they were to really to shave that way, they would almost certainly slice off some flesh, the razor is that sharp."
If anyone has the qualifications to show Mark exactly how it should be done, it's Ron, who has been a barber for more than fifty years.
